Week 41 on the farm

2019 Spring edition

What can I say about this week in general except that the mood swings of spring are hard. If the sun is out I want to be out. If the sun us behind clouds then I want to be inside. That makes things difficult with only one or two days of sun… However, there was still a few things that were noteworthy and little bit exciting on the farm.

In Animal News

The absolute biggest news on the farm is the hatching of the chicks. They make my heart sing. You can read more about them here.

We had another successful pig move, these guys are almost ready to be let out onto the paddock. My only concern is this wet weather has allowed them to dig through the dirt so easily. Fingers crossed our paddock fairs well enough before the big forest move. In other pig news I did our first pig weigh in this week. My intention is to provide an update on our overall plan for these little guys soon. Watch this space

To the sheep, there are two reasons sheep (or cattle) will have dirty behinds. One is worms and the other is very lush spring grass. We have had lush spring grass for the sheep and that made things very messy back there, as you can imagine. I spent some time giving the ewes a trim and don’t they look tidy. I need to have them shorn but do not want to do it too early, cause flystrike is real.

The cattle are all well enough but I am annoyed at the farm next door. It is being leased by a new person who is running bulls. They are not just noisy they are a little menacing. I chose not to graze my girls on the berm like I had planned because of them. Instead I sent them up the side of our property again, sooner than I had wanted too. It all came to a head when the bulls got out this week! It was a whole lot of drama and I am glad I sent my girls where I did. Those bulls had no reason to come to my place.

Whats growing

You guessed it not too much time spent in the garden. However, some of the seeds I planted in week 39 are sprouting! I think I am most excited about the watermelon. I spent some time in the shade house transplanting some cuttings and sowing a whole lot of sunflowers and some other flowers for the flower garden.

Speaking of the flower garden I spent a little time in there weeding still a lot to finish but small steps are what make big change.

Update on the apple cider vinegar

Its a flop, my weight I was using fell in and my apples were exposed to air and got moldy. I will still use the liquid on some of my acid loving plants well diluted. It is disappointing that after three weeks of waiting it was a fail. However, I am learning to celebrate the fails as learning opportunities.

If it looks like this throw it out

What I learned

In honor of celebrating the fails, the lesson I have learned is to check things everyday. Truth is I am not great at adding things to my daily, I am more about random check ups. Thankfully, that is not all I learned, I also learned I have a magnolia tree down the back part of the farm!

Isn’t it lovely

On the farm we grow animals, a garden, orchards, a forest, and experience. Follow along while I learn all the things required to care for and grow food. Lessons are learned mistakes are made but at the end of the day I wouldn't have it any other way
