Spring

There is a time at the precipice of spring when the world is muddy and soggy. You cant walk anywhere without becoming covered in mud. Saturation point has been reached and everywhere is pools of water —Toe deep in puddles —This is when, for a moment, one might think, will spring really come? Will the ground ever be firm again? Will my clothes not have mud on them? Will I ever regain the room that has been taken over by drying laundry? The days with limited sun seem to stretch forever and motivation becomes stifled.

To be fair to spring it does always come and everything looks new and green. Shades of green that I cant get enough of. Then spring is here and it feels a little warmer but still everything seems so hungry. For every day of sun there are three of rain, motivation ebbs and flows. All you want to do is stop taking extra feed out everyday but I think that is when winter has its last laugh. While the world is turning green and the flowers are starting to bloom everywhere, the animals are still hungry. The green is not enough… yet. This is a thing, they call it the the ‘hungry gap’. I discovered this phenomenon last year when my poor chickens were not being satiated by there normal amount of feed. What a crazy time it was.

So here I am again on the cusp of spring being teased by glimpses of fine weather but this time I know what to expect. Yet still finding it to be a frustrating time, I am ready for days of sun and not getting them. Perhaps I find it harder because I come from a place where the sun always shines and the weather is never really cold (although it feels cold when you are in it). Perhaps it is just a hard time for many…

On the farm we grow animals, a garden, orchards, a forest, and experience. Follow along while I learn all the things required to care for and grow food. Lessons are learned mistakes are made but at the end of the day I wouldn't have it any other way
