Animals Farm News Pigs

Pig update

Well a lot has happened since we have had the pigs on the farm. Sadly we lost the runt pig who just could not catch up. We did everything possible to try and help her and it was heart wrenching when she finally succumbed. One of the things we tried to do was separate her from the others and we put her with one of the other smaller pigs. This was a great idea until Moon, the male pig, was so greedy he jumped over to their side. Animals can be very brutal and he had it out for that little runt. After a couple days of this we moved the runt again but I think it was just too much. Goodbye sweet little pig.

After our loss we decided keeping the boy (moon) was not on the cards. He was close to becoming sexually mature and getting more aggressive. Thankfully not toward us but with the other pigs and I was not going to have him compromise the rest. Moon was sent to the sales and will be a happy grower for someone else. Now we have 4 and they are healthy happy and growing well. It was a relief to have him go and the other four grew so well without him around but the true star grower was Ham Solo.

I then received a call from the butcher. There is a space available for us to take one in. We chose to take the spot and sent one to the butcher. After that we were left with three and those three will live and grow on the farm until closer to fall.

Since this is an update I thought it would be good to provide weights for the remaining four. These weights were taken the day before we sent Ham Solo to the butcher.

  • Harry Trotter 40.5lbs 18.3kg
  • Peter Porker 29.1lbs 13.1kg
  • Spot butt 1 39.1lbs 17.6kg
  • Ham Solo 65.3lbs 29.4kg

Everyone grew so well but I now know that my weights are a little off. I had Ham Solo at 29.4kgs whereas the butcher weighed her at 26kgs not a massive difference but it would be nice to get mine closer to reality.

On the farm we grow animals, a garden, orchards, a forest, and experience. Follow along while I learn all the things required to care for and grow food. Lessons are learned mistakes are made but at the end of the day I wouldn't have it any other way
